Thanks, Roger, for the nice thoughts on wine knowledge epiphanies and Italy. I probably will start with Chianti for the reasons you suggest ... if only I could afford to start with the Barolos of caro Piemonte.

Great point regarding the evolution of the wine taster. As we move into better or at least more specific wines, we begin to understand the differences "place" makes.

There is no better place than Italy to discover the uniqueness of wine. We would begin in Tuscany since it will be easy to obtain wines from the several districts of Chianti.

The wine of Chianti Classico will differ from a Colli Senesi or a Brunello Di Montalcino even though they are all primarily made with sangiovese.
